The compromise of 1850
Arguments over slavery in territory gained in the Mexican-American (1846-1848) War were all resolved in the Compromise of 1850. It all started in 1849 when California requested permission to enter the United States as a free state, which began to upset the balance between the free and slave states. Senator Henry Clay introduced and created a series of resolutions on January 29, 1850, in an attempt to seek a compromise and avert a crisis between North and South. The Compromise consisted of several laws making California as a free state, creating Utah and New Mexico territories with the question of slavery which was later determined by popular sovereignty, settling a Texas-New Mexico boundary, ending the slave trade in Washington, D.C., and making it easy for southerners to recover run away slaves.
